Ambulance Care Assistant

Ambulance care assistants collect and look after people who need to travel to healthcare appointments.

You will transport patients to and from appointments, ensure they feel supported and calm, and help them settle back in at home.

You will be based in a hospital or ambulance station, although a lot of your time will be spent in an ambulance.

You will be required to wear an ambulance uniform.

Responsibilities

  • Lift and help patients in and out of the ambulance, ensuring they are comfortable 

  • Reassure patients during the journey 

  • Settle patients back at home after their appointments 

  • Check and maintain the ambulance and its equipment 

  • Keep accurate records of journeys 

Career progression:

  • You can progress in this team to become a team leader or supervisor, managing a group of ambulance care assistants 

  • You can take further training to transfer to the emergency care team, including training as a paramedic 

  • You may transfer to a desk-based role such as training, health and safety, or operational management 

Key information

  • Typical salary: £20,000 to £23,000 (37.5-hours per week )

  • Often includes shift work (days, nights, weekends, bank holidays)

  • Up to 27 days annual leave

  • No qualifications or prior experience needed, including GSCEs, A-Levels, or BTECs

  • Must have a full, manual driving license when you apply. You then be trained on how to drive an ambulance vehicle 

  • Must be willing to wear a uniform 

  • Must have the right to work in the UK 

  • Eligible for NHS worker discounts
